Thank you for a wonderful year!

I just want to give a really big THANK YOU out to the universe and to ALL of the amazing people in it that have supported my business this year.

Whether you came to me for custom sewing needs or alterations, shopped with me online or in person at one of the many markets, or spread the word about my business by sharing, liking, commenting or posting about my business, I appreciate each and every one of you!

Friends, family, clients, acquaintances and everyone in my network of relationships, you’ve made this year an amazing one and my husband and I can’t thank you enough for making our year so rewarding in so many ways.

I’m taking a couple of weeks off to celebrate the holidays with family and friends, so I’ll see you again in the new year!

Have a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everyone!

Wedding Choice Awards 2019

2020 has just begun and the 2nd Annual Central Iowa Wedding Choice Awards just took place February 7th.

This year I was nominated once again and honored to be among so many amazing wedding professionals.

While I didn’t take home the gold for 2019, I couldn’t be more thankful to have been nominated two years in a row and a bronze award is still pretty amazing! Thank you for everyone who voted for me!

We had a wonderful time celebrating all the winners and I got to show off my newest creation: a beautiful custom red dress that I designed for the event! I felt so glamorous and it was so much fun getting back into design and creating something for myself! (Because we all know how hard it is to find time for ourselves!)

thank you again to all the nominations as here’s to 2020!

Happy Friday!

It's the first Friday of November! But I'm still reminiscing about October and Halloween! Have you been following me on my Facebook page? @designedbykanyamarie and you would have seen all the fun outfits and shenanigans that happened this year!

Before I jump into Halloween, I want to go back to the final weekend of September, where we celebrate Oktoberfest! I love this holiday and my husband and I always have a blast dressing up together in our best bavarian outfits "prost"-ing the fall spirit!

And then of course, we get to Halloween. This is by far my favorite holiday of the year. Because who doesn't love to dress up in costume and pretend to be something else for a day?

This year I participated in a Trunk Or Treat event, where I decorated up my car and the kiddos could go around in a safe environment and get candy! I was a favorite of all the little girls dressed up in my Mermaid costume!

Then my husband and I dressed up for a halloween party as Waldo and Carmen of Where's Waldo and Where in the World is Carmen sand Diego! While Erik was recognized by most everyone of any age, I was more popular for those of our age or a bit older who remember the Carmen San Diego show! But nonetheless it was fun to be dressed as such a recognizable couple!

And then of course, I brought out an oldie but a goodie for our Beggar's Night trick or treat night as a black cat. Can't go wrong with a classic!!

What did you dress as this year? I would love to see your costumes!

Another year gone by.

One more year is in the books! It's been such an incredible journey here in my business and what a year it has been! A new house, means new business location, which means room to grow and expand!

IMG_2289.JPG

The hubster and I have officially been in our new house for a year (well, a little more than that) and having our own house meant that I was able to move my business into the basement bedroom! This also meant that I now had my business at home with me (no more commuting!!) and had more room to expand and take on more clients!

IMG_2294.JPG

Not only did all of that happen, but because I had expanded my business, I also made the big decision to quit working at my part time job in order to pursue my home based job full time!! And what a whirlwind that change has been! Theres been a lot of learning and self disciplinary work that has gone into making my job a success and I couldn't be happier with the results!

Thank you to everyone that has chosen to come to me for their alterations and sewing needs and to my family and friends for all of their support in my growing business and dreams! It's been an amazing year and I can wait to see where the next one will take me!

New Location! I'm moving my business!!

How exciting it is to be moving! I've been working my business for three years now out of a lovely condo unit in West Des Moines, and although it's been fabulous, I'm excited to say that my hubby and I have bought our First House! and I'll be moving my business into it soon!

This means that I'll be in the new location and officially doing all appointments out of it beginning April 1st. The new location will be in Altoona, IA. I'm just switching to the other side of town!

For brides I currently have, no worries, I'll continue to service you and your needs at the condo unit in WDM. All new bookings will be made for my Altoona location.

Thanks so much to everyone who has been with me, and for choosing me to do your alterations and custom sewing! It's been wonderful and my business has never been better!

Vintage Charm

Just last weekend I participated in a bridal show at the Salisbury House in Des Moines. What a fantastic place to be! It was such a privilege to be a part of the Preferred Bridal show. I love that each event they do is in a unique and gorgeous venue, and what a way for them to show off these great places to new brides! I hope that many of you were able to come, it was such a great time and I thoroughly enjoyed talking to all of you who did come out to the show! Despite the icky weather!

I was extremely lucky to have my mother in town to help me out for the weekend, she was such a great assistant! Ironing veils, talking to brides, and helping me load and unload all of my things! Wish I had her around more often!

I was also very fortunate to take part in the photo shoot that occurred after the show had ended. A couple of photographers signed up to broaden their portfolio by taking photos around the house. I provided two of my dress designs to be used in the set. It was such a blast to work with the photographer and to see my gowns in a whole new setting! Candice Smith Photography really did a wonderful job of capturing the look of the gowns as well as the house and what a phenomenal ending to the day! It was also so great to be able to see and visit areas of the house that I've never been to. Like the library! A room that's normally closed to visitors, but a gorgeous place for a photo shoot. I've attached a couple pictures of the day, but more will come later!

Seeing plaid...

Just thought I'd share with everyone the latest custom project I've done. This last one was for a gal who was of the low maintenance variety and wanted a bridal dress that suited her personality as well as her expectations of no fuss and easy wear. The best part? She was on her way to be married over in lovely Scotland! The plan was to create a bridal skirt so that she could wear the appropriate attire of a plaid flannel shirt with it. The final result is pictured below. I'm so proud of this outfit! She was such a great bride to work with and the design of the skirt is one of my favorites!

Upcoming April Bridal Forum

The Preferred Bridal Show is hosting their next bridal forum on Sunday, April 27th from noon to 2:30 pm. This is a great opportunity to see a unique venue while at the same time chatting to vendors like myself and finding out what else is available to you.

I will have a small gift for the first 70 brides that walk through the door, as well as a drawing, to be held the following Monday. A Bride to Be Experience

Sunday was the Everything Bridal Show at the HyVee conference center. A place where vendors come together to make their pitches to newly engaged couples and where couples learn about the available services and can make decisions about who and what they want for their wedding.
Normally, I'm on the other end of these vendor-bride relations, but this time, I had the opportunity to be the bride and experience the show for myself. I have five awesome bridesmaids that all got together to help me make these decisions and came to the show with me. We had a great start to the show after parking. It was so busy that we parked a ways away, but one of the limo companies was running rounds around the lot and gave us a ride to the front door. We felt a bit like celebrities with the special treatment. After receiving my "bride to be" sticker and registering for door prizes, we plunged into the crowd and began our search for a photographer, a florist, and a cake decorator.
It was a good thing that I had these goals that I was looking for, because the number of vendors at the show is a bit staggering. It can be rather overwhelming to have to wade through a crowd and you see three bridal shops, a caterer and two hotels in a row, none of them being a vendor that you necessarily need. On the other hand, looking down an aisle and seeing five photographers in a row and thinking that you need to talk to all of them, can be a headache as well. Luckily for me, I had my maids to help me out. They talked to some, I talked to some, and we compared notes at the end. In this way, I was able to come up with a couple favorites in each category.
All in all it was a really fun say. I was really happy to spend this time with my bridesmaids and I think I found exactly what I was looking for. I'm getting very excited for my wedding and I can't wait till the big day. I do recommend that if you are planning on attending a bridal show, have a list of what you are looking for. This can really make it easier to get through the show so you aren't overwhelmed by talking to everyone there. But don't forget to take it slow and check out the caterers and hotels. Some of them bring great food, and you may find a great restaurant that you didn't know existed, plus the hotels often have great drawings. You could win a trip or a romantic weekend stay. So keep and open mind and don't forget that you're there also to have fun. Enjoy it while you can!

Upcoming bridal show

Are you recently engaged? Ready to start planning your wedding? Well, what better way to get in touch with all kinds of vendors from all over the state, then to attend a bridal show? The HyVee conference center will be hosting their winter bridal forum this coming Sunday (January 12th) from 10am to 3pm. There will be vendors of all kinds from cakes and flowers to photographers and DJs.

Sadly, I will not personally have a booth there this time. But happily, I will be there as a registered bride! I'm very excited to be able to get the same experience as all you other newly engaged couples and be on the other side of the vendor-bride relationship. :) I will be a part of the fashion show though and I'm very excited about that. The show begins at 1pm, so be sure to save yourself a seat so you can see all the latest trends in the bridal world.

Hope you all get the chance to check out the show! Once you do, and if you've found your dress, be sure to give me a call for alterations! I'll be sure to give the best experience and quality work. Hope to see you soon!

A Belated Happy Thanksgiving!

I'm a few days late in getting over here to wish everyone a very happy Thanksgiving, but I hope you all got to enjoy lots of turkey, cranberry sauce and mashed (or sweet) potatoes! I know I did! My holiday was spent with my extended family. We entertained ourselves with silly games and crafts, and even a round of golf with my grandpa! We lucked out with the weather and were able to spend a lot of time outside on the farm which was great! Now, it's time to focus on getting projects finished and start baking and wrapping for the next holiday!

Chicago Bridal Market

What a weekend! I had the great opportunity to go to the Chicago Bridal Market. What an exciting time! I'm still feeling a little bit of the dress overload. When I arrived on Saturday, I was just in time for the evening fashion show. What fun that was! We enjoyed some cocktails and bites and then the show began. Forty-five minutes of gorgeous gowns; wedding dresses, bridesmaids and mothers gowns and even prom and really fancy evening gowns. It was a lot to take in. Of course, as much fun as this was, it was nothing compared to what I was getting into the next day. And I had no idea.

Sunday was sensory overload. When I arrived at the Merchandise Mart, I was expecting to find my associates right away. Of course, life never happens the way you expect, and so I was left to wonder around on my own for a little while. I'm not sure how I would describe the market. As I stepped off the elevator, I had to options, go right, which was full of color, sparkles so bright you needed sunglasses, and brightly color banners and signs (this was the prom section). To my left, everything was white, ivory, soft and demure, black accents, and rows and rows of white bridal gowns. Of course, everyone wants to get your attention. If you're an established buyer, most of the design houses know who you are, they greet you, hug you, offer to show you anything. Me, however, I was viewed as a brand new buyer. Here they came with a bag, filled with papers, pens, anything you might need to order their product, they ask who you're with, would you like a seat, can I get a water, food, would you like to see a dress on the runway. The list goes on and on. The houses also do something called informal modeling. You tell them which dress you want to see, they'll have the models change for you so you can see what it looks like on a body. Of course, they have dresses on dress forms as well, but this way you can see how they move and wear. It was really quite something. I think
I've collected 6 or 7 bags of goodies. I pretty much ate my way through each booth. My associates were always one booth ahead of me, but I was happy to take my time looking and absorbing everything.

All in all, it was definitely an experience. I can't wait until the next one and I hope that I am able to go. Seeing the new designers also motivates me to get my own line finished and to make more and more gowns so that one day I may be one of the booth holders and asking people to buy my gowns. Until then, I have a lot of sewing to do.
